How Companies Can Support the Safety of LGBTQ+ Business Travellers

Introduction

Employers are being urged to improve their support of LGBTQ+ business travellers following reports of insufficient pre-trip guidance from businesses. In an increasingly globalised world, business travel has become a crucial aspect of corporate operations. For LGBTQ+ employees, however, travel can present unique challenges and risks. Companies have a responsibility to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their employees, including those from the LGBTQ+ community.

To help LGBTQ+ employees safe for work-related travel, businesses need to implement comprehensive strategies that address their unique needs and concerns. This includes developing inclusive travel policies, providing necessary training resources, and fostering an inclusive company culture.

Pre-Trip Risk Assessment

Develop and enforce travel policies that explicitly address the needs and concerns of LGBTQ+ employees. This includes:

  • Pre-Travel Information: Evaluate the legal and social status of LGBTQ+ individuals in the destination country, potential risks, cultural norms, and safety tips. Resources like the ILGA provide up-to-date information on LGBTQ+ rights and safety worldwide.

  • Medical Support: Provide a list of recommended medical facilities and professionals in travel destinations who are known for being LGBTQ+ affirming. Companies should also ensure that their travel insurance policies cover medical emergencies related to gender-specific needs and provide clear guidelines on how to access medical support in case of an emergency.

  • Protocols: Provide a detailed emergency response plan that outlines steps to take in various scenarios, such as discrimination, harassment, or safety threats.

Provide Training and Resources

Share the pre-trip guidance to all employees and not just those who are open about their gender identity and sexual orientation to equip all employees with the knowledge and resources they need to travel safely:

  • Cultural Competency Training: Offer training sessions that cover cultural norms and legal issues related to LGBTQ+ rights in various countries. This helps travellers understand the risks and prepare.

  • Travel Safety Workshops: Conduct workshops focused on travel safety for LGBTQ+ employees, covering topics like recognising safe accommodations and understanding local laws.

Confidential Support Systems

Create support systems that ensure confidentiality and offer assistance before, during, and after travel:

  • Anonymous Reporting: Implement a system where employees can anonymously report any incident or concerns they experience while travelling without fear of retaliation.

  • Emergency Contacts: Provide travellers with a list of emergency contacts who are knowledgeable about LGBTQ+ issues and can provide immediate assistance and support.

  • Choice: Empower employees to decide whether or not they feel comfortable travelling after getting their pre-travel awareness briefing. Offering LGBTQ+ travellers this choice, companies show respect for their employees' well-being and autonomy, ensuring they do not feel pressured to travel to locations where they might face significant risks or discomfort.

Through implementing these strategies, companies can create a safer and more supportive environment for LGBTQ+ business travellers. Ensuring the wellbeing of all employees, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, is not only a moral imperative but also a key component of a successful and inclusive business strategy.
